Pentland Group continues to be a brand and retail powerhouse.
Its brand management division, Pentland Brands, owns and operates Speedo, Berghaus, Canterbury, Mitre and Red or Dead, among others, as well as holding several footwear licences. This year it invested in Californian sneaker brand SeaVees.
The retail division comprises JD Sports Fashion, in which Pentland Group holds a 57% share. Rubin joined JD’s board last year as non-executive director.
In its most recent full-year results to 31 December 2016, Pentland Group revenue leapt 21% to £2.9bn, while operating profit soared 50% to £331m. However, Rubin’s team have had to make some tough decisions: restructuring Pentland Brands will lead to 100 job cuts. Last year: 21
