Drapers Top 100 2017 – 69. Nigel Lugg, chairman, UK Fashion and Textile Association

In his role as chairman at the UK Fashion and Textile Association (UKFT), Nigel Lugg has set out to protect businesses of all sizes in the fashion and textile supply chain as the country prepares to leave the EU. Under his watch, the association is forming a Brexit board made up of representatives from textile and garment manufacturers, brands, retailers and other stakeholders, to put together a unified strategy to present to the government.

As well as actively engaging with the government throughout the year, Lugg has passionately defended UK manufacturers against claims that the “vast majority” of them are unethical, pointing to “hundreds and hundreds of factories” that offer a safe working environment.

The UKFT was also named as the sector skills body for the fashion and textiles industry earlier this month, tasked with managing apprenticeship frameworks, and the registration and certification of apprentices in England, Scotland and Wales.

As Brexit continues to unfold, the industry can be comforted by Lugg’s determination to ensure its voice is heard.
