Touted as the next business to give Chinese tech giants Alibaba and Tencent a run for their money, JD.com stepped up its focus on the UK this year, joining forces with the British Fashion Council to support the BFC/Vogue Fashion Designer Fund. Through this partnership it will help the winning designers with access to the Chinese market.
Earlier this year, Liu, who founded the business in 1998, visited the UK in a bid to persuade brands to sell their goods on his site. As of May, the business was valued at $45.7bn (£33.9bn) by Forbes, although it only achieved its first profitable quarter earlier this year. Meanwhile, Liu’s personal worth is estimated at almost $11bn (£8.3bn).
