Big brands give Harrogate a miss

Buyers and exhibitors were in high spirits at Harrogate Lingerie & Swimwear Exhibition this week, but were concerned by the absence of big-name brands.

Elle Macpherson Intimates did not put in an appearance at the show, and neither did Triumph or DB Apparel, whose brands include Wonderbra and Playtex. Intimas Group-owned labels Lepel and Charnos were also absent, with Intimas currently in administration.

Susan Evans, owner of lingerie indie De-Zire in Inverurie, Scotland, said: “This is an essential show but some of the big firms were missing. Still, I was impressed by the product on offer but I couldn’t afford some brands’ minimum orders.”

Carol Duncumb, the former Intimas chief executive who launched her own bra label, BeMyBra, at Harrogate for spring 10, said show organiser Brintex needed to be “more creative to draw in the big names”. However, she did exceed her sales target after two days at the show.
