Bread & Butter

Chinos ruled the roost at Bread & Butter Berlin in sorbet shades and pop brights, while pathwork effects moved the check on

There’s no stopping it: the chino is here to stay, at least until spring 12, anyway. For a show known for its big-hitting denim brands, Bread & Butter Berlin saw chinos topple jeans in the trend stakes, with every brand championing the cleaner, smarter trouser style.

Where the trend has moved on from spring 11 is in the use of colour. Gone are the days of beiges and creams exclusively; streetwear brands embraced sorbet shades and brights, with cornflower blue a favourite.

In fact, colour played an important role throughout spring 12 across all product categories, notably outerwear. Blue in particular, from pastel to cornflower to navy, was key.

The dominance of the chino meant there was no definitive silhouette in jeans. Replay backed flares in womenswear while Levi’s said skinny and tapered jeans would be best-sellers in menswear. But light washes did emerge as a trend across jean brands.

Brands also found a new way to move on the perennial favourite – the check –by using patchwork techniques. In fact, the patchwork effect was also seen on pockets of polos and shirts and as a shoulder detail.

Overall, attention to detail in design and fabrication was what allowed brands to stand out and differentiate themselves. Pretty Green, Boxfresh and Gio-Goi were all good examples, offering exemplary outerwear, tops and bottoms respectively.

Elsewhere – as at menswear show Pitti Uomo in Florence last month – stripes were important, while the workwear and heritage trends plodded along nicely.
