From the A-list front row to the pouring ‘rain’, Burberry Prorsum’s show lived up to expectations. Entitled Town and Field, Christopher Bailey’s autumn 12 collection married a slick gentrified feel with a country gentlemen look, complete with tweed caps and quilted jackets. He captured smart town living with structured outerwear, bellow-pocket pencil skirts and sculptured shirting. Meanwhile, the countryside theme came across in oversized waxed field jackets, slouchy T-shirts and knits with owl and dog prints – a look that will transfer well to the high street. Contrasting fabrics and shapes played a strong part, with peplums used extensively, yet most outfits were nipped in at the waist. Bailey employed a plethora of fabrics, from tweed and corduroy to velvet and shearling, often mixing and layering the materials to hammer home the show’s theme.
