30 Under 30: Ryan Jones

Affiliate and social marketing manager, Shop Direct.

Ryan Jones

Ryan Jones

“Ryan is one of the most talented people I’ve had the pleasure of working with. He’s passionate about everything he does, creatively minded and commercially savvy,” says Shop Direct’s head of digital Chris Howard. “He has high expectations of himself and others and is not afraid to challenge anyone regardless of level, yet balances this with being a supportive people manager committed to the development of his team.”

Howard adds that he has been “unwavering” in his determination to drive affiliate marketing, citing the work he has done with Quidco to pioneer new techniques to target their customer base and understand the incremental value of the activity.

Jones got his grounding at Liverpool John Moores University, where he graduated with a BA (Hons) in Marketing, before landing his first permanent role in digital marketing at Shop Direct after “hounding the recruitment team incessantly for weeks”.

His perseverance paid off. He started working in the area of affiliates, display and price comparison across all Shop Direct brands including Very.co.uk, spending 90% of his time on data. By the age of 24 he was responsible for a £2.3m budget for affiliate marketing and managed to grow the channel by 24% in his first year, which led to a promotion to affiliates manager in October 2013.

Soon after that he was also offered to manage a new channel for Shop Direct, social advertising. It seems there is no stopping Jones.
Howard concludes that he can see Jones leading a digital team or as a “potential entrepreneur of the future”.
