Regional business manager, central Ireland, New Look
Name-checking chief executive Anders Kristiansen as an inspiration, New Look’s Samantha Carter is en route to become a future retail director, if her first six months as regional business manager are anything to go by. “The transformation Samantha has delivered in one of our most historically challenging regions is exceptional,” says Elaine Wrigley, head of retail for the North and Ireland.
“Her region has moved from the bottom profit contribution to the top third within three months. She has the highest team engagement score of the division, the most improved store standards and highest like-for-like growth in the business for the last quarter.”
Carter started out as an Arcadia management trainee in 2004, before becoming store manager at Tommy Hilfiger in 2005 and then a sales manager at River Island in 2006. By 2007, she had joined All Saints, rising from store manager to retail operations manager. Managerial roles at Lipsy, Jack Wills and Bestseller followed before the move to New Look in March.
The secret to her success is learning from others. “Recognise a good leader when you see one and sponge up their qualities,” advises Carter. “And always listen to sales assistants; they tell you how it is.”
