Creating social media accounts for your business

Social media is here to stay. No matter how daunting it initially can be, with over 800milion active facebook users and over a billion Tweets sent every three days, it provides the perfect interactive platform for businesses.

As a PR agency we practice social media as often as reading magazines and papers – which is a lot!

What do we use it for?

In a nutshell:

  • Responding and engaging with customers.
  • Giving the business a ‘voice’. Personalising a business makes it easier for customers to emotionally engage with it.
  • Communicating business news such as new collections, launch dates, special events etc.

How to create a Facebook page:

Step 1: Choose your business description eg. Local / Brand / Organization

Step 2: Choose a category eg. Clothes / Retail and read through the T’s and C’s and ‘accept’.

Step 3: You will see tabs laid out clearly including:

Image - Could be a product shot / brand logo / campaign shot

About - A brief description about your business.

Facebook Web Address– Facebook offer a web address to make it easier for people to find your page.

Step 4: Start posting!

Tip: Take time to think through what makes your business stand out and keep all explanations short and concise clearly communicating your USP – Unique Selling Points.

How to create a Twitter page:

Step 1: Join twitter – it will ask for your name, email and user name (you can change this late) but do think about what illustrates your business.

Step 2: Create the account.

Step 3: It will then prompt you to start following influential celebs of which you will choose five to follow.

Step 4: Similar to celebrities, it will then prompt you of people / organisations to follow under headings such as entertainment / music / fashion.

Step 5: Upload image and biography.

Step 6:  Change your design so your background colours etc are personalized to your business.

Step 7: Start Tweeting! Remember twitter only allows for 140 characters a tweet so no waffling.

Once you have followers don’t lose them. Interact and engage with your audience keeping content new, fresh and interesting.  More on this next week…..
