The class of 2013: Kat Maconie

With Drapers 30 under 30 for 2014 set to be unveiled on January 11 next year, we catch up with some of the stars of 2013. This week it’s footwear designer Kat Maconie’s turn in the spotlight.

How did it feel being named in Drapers’ 30 under 30?

I was extremely excited and proud to be named one of the 30 under 30. It was great to be recognised for all the hard work  I have put into the brand over the past five years.

What has happened in your career since then?

Kat Maconie was invested in by a private equity firm called Oakley, which has enabled us to grow the team and take the label to the next level. We now have some very exciting distribution opportunities in China ahead.

Do you have any tips or advice for other people who want to get started?

If you are going to start a brand and do not have external investment then do not leave your current job, or get a job. Run your label on the side and work on it at the weekends and evenings until your label is able to support its running costs. Its important you are constantly able to invest money into it and that you do not need to draw a salary from it at the start.

Build an identity – your label needs to have something unique and identifiable about it to start to crack this highly competitive market.
