With Drapers 30 under 30 for 2014 set to be unveiled on January 11 next year, we catch up with some of the stars of 2013. This week it’s Urban Outfitters marketing manager Katy Brown’s turn in the spotlight.
How did it feel being named in Drapers’ 30 under 30?
It was an absolute highlight of my career to be recognised by a publication I’ve read since starting in the business and regard so highly – and to sit alongside such a talented range of other under 30s’ in the business.
What has happened in your career since then?
Since this recognition, I’ve consolidated my work on and offline and am now marketing manager at Urban Outfitters. It’s truly my dream brand because it connects fashion, music and lifestyle and feels like all my previous experiences at Kerrang Radio, Selfridges, Harvey Nichols and Oasis have all come together. It hasn’t done much for my shopping addiction though, I will admit.
Do you have any tips or advice for other people who want to get started in a career in clothing retail?
Determination, confidence and enthusiasm. And also, an understanding that the route to fashion retail doesn’t have to be steeped in fashion every step of the way. I studied for a Music degree and first cut my teeth at Kerrang Radio before moving into marketing and events.
