Understanding employment law – where to get employment advice

Understanding employment law – where to get employment advice from the Federation of Small Businesses

When your business employs people, it must comply with a raft of employment laws, many to protect your employees but also on aspects such as tax, working time and health and safety.

Employment law is constantly changing so it is vital that you keep up-to-date with what is going on to ensure your staff are treated fairly and to avoid potentially costly tribunals.

Here is a handy list to find out about changes to employment law, and to keep on top of it all:

  • The Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service – known as Acas – works to prevent and resolve employment disputes, provides information and advice and promotes good practice www.acas.org.uk
  • Business Link has a wealth of information that is clear and concise for all small firms www.businesslink.gov
  • The FSB has a 24 hour legal advice line for its members www.fsb.org.uk
  • Government departments, including the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the Department for Work and Pensions, will both have up-to-date news and laws on specific issues www.bis.gov.uk or www.dwp.gov.uk
