It would be easy to attribute the blanket deployment of checks to the style’s youthfully driven prevalence on shirts. But in truth there was a bit more to it than that and in the men’s versions shown on both Paris and Milan runways this trend was spurred on by designers’ delvings into heritage fabrics. The result? Oversized Glen checks were reproduced in grey and black –what else in this sombre season – and took on the proportions of classic plaids for a look-at-me appeal at Wintle, Tornade and Emporio Armani while the swaddling blanket-like look was ramped up in outerwear at Burberry and Bottega Veneta.
