Chinese shoppers remain biggest spenders on tax-free shopping

Chinese tourists continued to spend more on tax-free shopping last year than any other nation, a report from tax-free shopping company Global Blue has found.

Shoppers from China spent 20% more on tax-free shopping, which allows consumers from outside the EU to claim back VAT on their shopping, last year than the previous year. Chinese shoppers spent an average of €815 (£672) per transaction.

Russian shoppers ranked the biggest spenders on tax-free goods in 2013, up 13% on the previous year.

After China and Russia, shoppers from Indonesia, the US and Japan racked up the biggest spend last year.

The report found that Russians clocked up more transactions than any other nation in 2013, representing 24% of Global Blue’s total tax-free shopping transactions. Russians spent an average of €356 (£294) per transaction.
