Footwear brand Clarks is celebrating the 130th birthday of its Hygienic range of shoes.
Released in 1883, the Hygienic collection was the first range of footwear designed to fit the shape of the foot.
The range was targeted at both adults and children and it was the first time a footwear brand had ever promoted the importance of correctly fitted footwear.
While the range is no longer sold, the principles of the Hygienic range and the concept of correctly fitted footwear continues in every shoe manufactured by Clarks.
Tim Crumplin, archivist at Clarks, said: “It’s wonderful to celebrate such an iconic moment in Clarks’ history. The promises that the original founders strived to deliver - health, comfort and expertise - are all still very much part of our ethos today.
“In a time when well-fitting shoes are now the norm, this anniversary is a fantastic reminder of what we have accomplished.”
