Cold weather causes fashion sales to suffer at John Lewis

Fashion sales at John Lewis dipped last week owing to the “extended winter weather”.

The department store chain said that fashion sales fell back 6% in the week to March 16, compared to the same week the previous year.

Womenswear and accessories were particularly badly affected, down 10% and 14% respectively. However, menswear had a stronger week, up by 8%.

The one area of womenswear which did perform well was the more winter focused product, as a result of the colder weather, with knee-length coats sales up by a massive 140% and gloves up by 40%.

In menswear too, it was the warmer product that enjoyed the best sales.

Overall the department store saw total sales fall by 0.3% while online sales increased by 6.5% compared to last year.

Peter Ruis, brand and buying director at John Lewis, said: “With Easter on the horizon, our marketing campaign launching this week and availability in a really strong position, we’re well set for a good result over this important trading period.”
