Debenhams to launch 'Christmas Spectacular' Sale this week

Debenhams is to launch its ‘Christmas Spectacular’ Sale this Wednesday, offering price cuts of up to 40%.

The Sale runs from November 16 to 20. Discounts are available throughout the store including 20% off womenswear, menswear, kidswear and gifts.

By launching its Sale in November, Debenhams hopes to capture the ‘early bird shopper’ who wants to spread out the cost of Christmas.

The Sale debuted online yesterday. Followers of the retailer’s Twitter page can get a sneak preview of the in-store Sale on Tuesday.

The latest issue of Drapers revealed that cut-price goods now occupy a quarter of high street retail space, with an average discount of more than a third off, according to a detailed study of 23 fashion retailers.

It is the latest evidence to demonstrate the market pressures forcing retailers into strategic discounting and promotions to keep cash flowing, as they battle to protect brands and margins.

  • Debenhams traditionally appear to have little interest in protecting a brands image as they always go on sale early. They consistently appear to have problems getting a decent margin on the brands they stock. As a supplier you have to weigh up the pros and cons of dealing with Debenhams, seeing your brand devalued and the stock you hold them which is almost certainly never taken, which in turn is then sold to other retailers at a discount. Only a fool pays full price for mainstream items in November these days and Debenhams are one of the reasons why this is the case.

  • I am affraid Debenhams are ruining the high street and retail. Christmas trading will never be the same again and shoppers will always be holding onto their money waiting for the likes of Debenhams to panic and mass discount.
