Demand for shop floor jobs soars

The number of applicants for shop floor jobs is soaring, leaving young people struggling to compete with experienced staff for temporary vacancies on the high street.

According to reports, retailers have seen a surge in candidates vying for shop floor vacancies and the quality of those applicants is allowing retailers to be far more selective.

A John Lewis PR manager told The Financial Times: “Across many of our new shops we are seeing a high proportion of applicants with previous retail experience.”

The result is a large pool of applicants for jobs that employers would previously have found difficult to fill on anything more than a temporary basis.
