Drapers’ new forum aims to get indies networking

Drapers has created a group on business networking website LinkedIn so that independents around the country can network and share ideas about how to trade through the recession.

Drapers has created a group on business networking website LinkedIn so that independents around the country can network and share ideas about how to trade through the recession.

The group, called the Drapers Independent Retailer Forum, is dedicated to independent fashion and footwear retailers, mini chains and boutiques in the UK and Republic of Ireland.

Members will include menswear and womenswear indies, unisex stores, young fashion retailers, independent department stores, footwear specialists and accessories boutiques.

The group is designed to create a platform for independents to network with each other and discuss the issues they face in the current climate, as well as share advice and business tips and celebrate the successes, innovation and creativity that independent retailers bring to the UK high street.

Current group discussions include the issue of monthly rents and whether independent retailers are taking advantage of the fact that landlords have agreed to allow retailers with fewer than four stores to pay monthly rents instead of quarterly rents. There is also an active discussion about autumn 09 buying and prices of brands next season, with participants discussing whether they have bought into classic styles or are backing “special” product to win out in the recession.

This is a forum for you, Drapers’ core readership, so please sign up and start your own discussions on the issues you are facing or the opportunities you are finding.
To join the group, register with www.linkedin.com and then search for Drapers Independent Retailer Forum under the ‘Groups’ heading. For more information or for help in signing up, email laura.weir@emap.com.
