Fashion dominates at John Lewis clearance

Fashion has dominated the start of John Lewis’ clearance Sale, with takings in the category up 21.6% on last year.

Overall sales are up 11.5% to £112.9m on the week to December 29, with every day up on its 2011 equivalent.

But fashion has nearly doubled this increase, registering as the best performing category so far. Handbags are the most in-demand product.

Online sales also continued strongly, up 21.7% on the previous year, thanks largely to the click-and-collect option.

This week comes on the back of a record performance from John Lewis during the seven days to December 22 as the retailer broke through the £150m barrier for the first time.

John Lewis ends its 2012 trading year in four weeks.

Susan Young, head of merchandising, said the year would be “one to remember”.
