Fashion sales “excelled” at John Lewis in the first full week of the retailer’s Clearance Sale.
Handbags were a popular choice with sales up 17% compared with the same week last year in the week to January 5, while total fashion sales rose 20%.
Overall sales at the retailer increased 26% to £91.8m, with Swindon and Croydon leading the way as the best-performing stores of the week. Sales at those branches climbed 34.6% and 28.2% respectively.
Online sales through Johnlewis.com were up 45.3% on the previous year.
Paula Nickolds, buying director for home, said: “This year we have more newness in store than ever before and the critical full-price sales are promising across all three directorates.
“This is testament to the hard work across buying and merchandising launching new season stock early to benefit from the high footfall during clearance.
“With a few days of clearance to go, the focus is on sell-through of the old stock and highlighting the stunning new ranges across all areas.”
This week Drapers exclusively revealed that John Lewis is to launch an own-label lifestyle range across menswear, womenswear and kidswear on February 1.
