Fashion sales dip 2.4%

Fashion sales declined 2.4% in the week to March 8 compared to the previous week. However, young fashion was more resilient than the rest of the sector, according to figures from BDO Stoy Hayward.

Some fashion retailers did report increased demand week on week for the first time since January, according to the figures, as increased promotional activity helped support some growth. But in general, it was the more affordable young fashion brands that outperformed the rest of the market.

Overall retail sales dropped just 0.6% in the week to March 8, a slight improvement.

BDO Stoy Hayward head of retail Rupert Eastell said: “Against the backdrop of unprecedented moves by the Bank of England to encourage lending, including a further drop in interest rates, trading conditions improved this week. In this market a small decrease in like for like sales is a positive performance, given the underlying economic conditions.”
