Fashion sales dip at John Lewis as warm weather continues

The warmer weather has been blamed for a dip in fashion sales at John Lewis last week.

The department store group reported that fashion sales fell 0.8% in the week to November 12, 2011 when compared to the same week the previous year.

The retailer said that sales in its fashion departments were mixed as it waits for the first bout of really cold weather with handbags and men’s foralwear being the bright spots.

Overall sales were also down 0.8% for the week compared to last year and the best performing store was Peter Jones which has recently undergone the final stage of its refurbishment programme.

Online sales via the retailer’s website,, led the selling results, accounting for 14% of the total sales for the week.

John Lewis managing director Andy Street said he is hoping the retailer’s Countdown to Christmas event taking place in stores this weekend will kick start the Christmas selling season.
