Fashion sales at John Lewis fell 2.2% last week as the department store group honoured its Never Knowingly Undersold commitment and matched prices as its competitor Debenhams went into sale.
The retailer said that warmer weather did help sales in some areas with sunglasses and John Lewis Collection selling well in its womenswear offer while in menswear linen trousers, shorts and swimwear all sold well.
Kidswear sales were also strong as the earlier Easter holiday helped with the sales of clothing and kids’ footwear.
Overall sales at the retailer were up 2.4% compared to the same week last year, boosted by a strong performance from johnlewis.com which was up 37% on last year.
The retailer said its website also saw it busiest trading day of the year on Monday (April 2) and all sections of the website performed well particularly women’s footwear which was up 78% on last year boosted by own-brand sandals.
“The focus is now on making sure we capitalise on the outstanding assortment we have in shops and online, and the fantastic range of promotions and activities we have planned for this Easter weekend,” said Jonathon Brown head of online sales at John Lewis.
