Fashion sales drop 2.9% for the week to March 15

Fashion like-for-like sales dropped 2.9% for the week ending March 15 week on week, according to figures from BDO Stoy Hayward.

Total like-for-like retail sales were down just 0.3% for the period.

BDO Stoy Hayward’s High Street Sales Tracker showed that fashion retailers had a mixed week, with some stores reporting good sales of spring options, but lower demand in other categories.

However, young fashion and footwear sales were generally strong, with formalwear, accessories and lingerie sales notably weaker.

BDO Stoy Hayward head of retail Rupert Eastell said: “With most of the country basking in fine weather, the mood amongst consumers brightened this week. As a result, many stores benefited from a strong uptake of seasonal spring products. However, despite these helpful developments, fashion sales remained negative with some stores not witnessing any pick-up in demand.”
