Fashion sales fall at John Lewis

Fashion sales at John Lewis fell by 3.6% last week after an early half-term the previous week.

Total sales for the week to February 25 were flat at £53.98m and posted a 39% rse with a consistent sale pattern across all merchandise groups.

The retailer did add that when looking at the last two weeks to include both this year’s and last year’s half term weeks, fashion sales were actually up.

John Lewis director of selling operations Nat Wakely said: “Not surprisingly it was a less attention-grabbing headline last week following our fabulous result the week before, given the change in timing of half term for most of our shops.

“In spite of that, finishing with level sales on last year was entirely respectable.”

John Lewis added that it would look to “maximise” on the earlier fall of Easter this year.
