Fashion sales increase at John Lewis despite the cold weather

Fashion sales had a difficult week at John Lewis on account of the continuing cold weather, managing an increase of just 5%.

Overall sales at the department store retailer increased 13.5% in the week to March 23 with customers choosing to buy last season’s winter product ahead of new season summer clothing.

Menswear performed the best out of all fashion departments with sales up 15% over the week, despite the cold. Nursery was also said to have had a strong week.

Online sales increased by 20% over the week compared to the same week last year.

Dino Rocos, operations director at John Lewis, said: “We are now facing into Easter and school holidays with an incredibly strong marketing campaign, including the Easter Weekend Event and the Shop Spring daily offers.”

The business was “well placed” to meet customer demand during the period, he added.
