Like-for-like fashion sales rose 4.2% for the week to June 7, the first increase in four weeks, as promotions helped drive trade.
Total retail sales increased by 2.8% on a like-for-like basis, the strongest result for more than eight weeks, according to BDO Stoy Hayward’s High Street Sales Tracker.
BDO Stoy Hayward said that the cooler weekend weather helped encourage shopping trips rather than leisure activity, and that targeted promotions helped some stores gain double-digit growth.
BDO Stoy Hayward head of retail Rupert Eastell said: “Positive economic news from a number of sectors helped bolster consumer confidence and spending, resulting in an encouraging week for many of the UK’s retailers, particularly those in the fashion and non-fashion sectors.”
“Overall like-for-like sales increased by 2.8% which represented the best weekly increase for more than two months as retailers benefited from higher footfall levels and more positive economic news concerning the economy. Targeted promotions also helped to drive sales, especially across the fashion sector, as did good product availability.”
In the same week last year, fashion sales were down 0.3%.
Non-store sales were up 38.3% which was the slowest rate of expansion this year.
