Fashion sales at John Lewis grew 8.2% in the week to August 1, versus a 2.2% rise in the comparable week last year.
Sales of women’s fashion rose 6% and accessories and beauty sales grew 11% during the week, thanks to new ranges and greater footfall as the ‘staycation’ factor kicked in.
The performances compared with a 5.6% sales increase to £50m across the board at the retailer’s 27 stores, while online operation John Lewis Direct posted a stellar 22.8% improvement.
John Lewis director of selling operations David Barford said: “It’s really encouraging to see, over the past few weeks, some stronger performances against last year. However, a note of caution as we start to move into bad-weather comparisons with last year.
“I am confident, however, that with the focus to deliver outstanding shopkeeping in our new autumn/winter layouts, supported by consistently good customer service.”
