Fashion sales climbed 11.8% at department store John Lewis last week as back-to-school sales peaked in Scotland.
Back-to-school lines in kidswear appeared earlier in stores than in previous years, resulting in what the department store described as encouraging sales in the week to 18 August.
Back-to-school trade was strongest in Scotland, but was “gaining momentum” in England and Wales.
Overall sales at John Lewis were up 14.5% with johnlewis.com continuing its strong performance, up 40.3% on the same week the previous year.
In terms of individual branches, Poole saw the strongest week - up 40.5%, head and shoulders above the next best performing store in Cardiff, which saw sales increase by 18.7%.
John Lewis director of retail operations development Simon Russell said: “With some slightly unsettled weather on the way for bank holiday weekend and the benefit of some exciting new ranges in shops, I am sure we are in for another good week.”
