Fashion sales up at John Lewis

Sales of fashion at department store retailer John Lewis rose 1.7% over the week to September 5, as the impact of last-minute back to school trade was clearly felt.

Total sales at the 27-store department store group rose 1% to £54.07m, with nine of the stores in the retailer’s portfolio making gains on last year after tough trading conditions the previous week.

John Lewis’ Trafford, Glasgow and Newcastle branches performed especially well, up 11.2%, 10.4% and 10.2% on last year respectively.

Especially strong performances were posted by schoolwear and children’s shoes, which posted a remarkable 51%improvement on last year.

John Lewis Direct once again experienced double-digit growth, delivering a 24% sales increase against the same week last year. The website now has 57 apparel brands available online. Last week almost 10% of sales were collected from shops in a record week for Deliver To Store For Collection

John Lewis commercial director Andrea O’Donnell said: “By the end of the week we will be annualising against weaker figures after the collapse of the first big financial institution last year. I see every reason for a mood of quiet optimism.”
