Fashion sales up in "challenging week" at John Lewis

Fashion was the bright spot at John Lewis last week in what the retailer described as a “challenging week”.

The retailer said fashion sales benefitted from the change in weather, rising by 4% in the week to April 20 with womenswear, accessories and kidswear all experiencing strong sales.

Online shopping also proved to be a popular channel for fashion sales, particularly over the weekend with sales up 39% on the previous year. Overall online sales were up 11% on the prior year.

Overall sales at the department store retailer fell by 0.1% as the better weather “kept a number of customers in their gardens rather than out shopping”.

Earlier this week John Lewis announced that it was now trading at an annual run rate of over £1bn online.

Mark Lewis online director of John Lewis said: “This is an incredible achievement, not least because we have achieved it a year earlier than originally targeted.”
