Finlay Grant

One reason I like menswear store Finlay Grant is that it smacks of tradition but is only two years old, which is an amazing achievement.

They’ve realised that there is a fairly well-to-do population in the Melrose area in Scotland which will travel if the product and service are right.

Finlay Grant sells a mixture of men’s shirts, knits and accessories, along with some tailoring and outerwear, with brands at the premium end of the market.
The customers are about 50% local shoppers and 50% holiday shoppers, and the store knows exactly how to appeal to that mix and who its market is.

The staff know all their regular customers by name, and their customers’ kids.

The store is a sophisticated shop in a small town of about 1,800 people with one high street, but despite that it pulls in shoppers from a very wide area including Edinburgh, Glasgow and London. Its customers are fiercely loyal.
