German etailer Zalando extends European reach

Clothing and footwear etailer Zalando will launch in Scandinavia in May, marking its eighth European market.

The German etailer will launch in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland, selling around 1,100 products. Zalando stocks a mix men’s, women’s and kids clothing and footwear, selling a range of high street and designer brands including GStar, Tommy Hilfiger, Miss Sixty, Buffalo, Blowfish and Diesel in its home market Germany, as well as Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, the Netherlands and the UK. It also stocks accessories, beauty and sportswear.

The Berlin-based company has also invested €100m to open a warehouse in Erfurt at the beginning of 2013, with capacity for over eight million products.

Robert Gentz, founder and chief executive of Zalando said: “Zalando went live in Germany in 2009 and in 2010 already generated net sales of €160m. During the first half of this year we have already surpassed this result with €200m net sales. Our growth is the result of a consistent marketing strategy and stable financing with a strong group of investors.”

Kurt Geiger former head of men’s buying Neil Steptoe joined Zalando at the end of last year.
