High street preview: autumn 09 menswear

For autumn the big menswear chains have looked to wholesale brands for inspiration, carving up the market by age and using the most commercially significant brands in each age segment as a design blueprint.

Slim tailoring silhouettes, clean-lined preppy-inspired casualwear, American collegiate styling, indie rock themes, heritage Brit sportswear, and the great outdoors informed the collections of most retailers targeting the 16 to 35 menswear market.

For design reference, the big young fashion chains have turned to brands ranging from Superdry and G-Star to Lyle & Scott and Fred Perry.
