Rises up the pecking order by adding more trend-led looks to its brilliant basics.
Poppy, bright and exciting, Uniqlo’s menswear has managed to take the retailer’s image of decent staples and add a new twist by bringing a flavour of its Japanese roots to the autumn range. Great bandana-print, camo and mix-and-match check flannel shirts are fun and complement the more everyday shirt options, while colours leap from the displays, particularly on the ultra-light down jackets. Boiled wool-mix blazers provide a considered smartness and various denim fits are well represented.
Uniqlo’s value really can’t be beaten on the high street. At £19.90, 100% merino knits are a steal, as are the patterned shirts at the same price, the quality of the flannel belying the cost. Shirts for the office are also well priced at £19.90. Jeans at either £19.90 or £34.90 are made from substantial fabric while the ultra-light down jacket at £59.90 is good value considering the technical development Uniqlo puts into its materials. Duffles and pea coats at £89.90 are well finished for the money.
The clean and tidy shopfit allows the punchy product to be shown off at its best, and the clear zoning of the ultra-light down jackets, shirting and trousers welcomes you as you get off the escalator. Through into the denim area, the mood changes and is slightly darker and works for the product, while the jolly sock display is always a highlight. The staff here are the best at striking a balance between friendly and professional, while the boldly arranged windows take the down jackets as the theme and go big with it. Just one downside: having to venture downstairs and to the back of the womenswear section to pay.
