Ben Sherman

Mods, skinheads and rockers took over the nation and Ben Sherman’s button-downs instantly became the signature fashion essential.  The iconic look that has now spanned 5 decades and seen Ben Sherman develop into a true lifestyle brand and A Great British Icon.

Inspired by the post war youth of the late 50s / early 60s who in turn drew their inspiration from the protestors and revolutionist writers of the era, Ben Sherman’s AW10 menswear collection ‘…And The Beat Goes On’ borrows from this group who became the voice of a generation, and known simply as the Beatniks.

Each drop captures the era’s nostalgic mood and carries the feeling of those classic, investment pieces that have been passed down from generation to generation.

The collection kicks off with ‘Nineteen Sixty Three’ where re-worked classics such as the Anorak in traditional wax fabrications are modernised through colour and fit.  Tonal checks feature on a nylon windcheater with authentic detailing.  Shirting remains the life and soul of the collection, with notable pieces being chambrays and denim inspired vintage checks, off set against laundered stripes in indigo tones, referencing the functionality of utilitarian styling.
In drop two ‘Original Beatnik’ looks at the styling and attitude of this group whilst maintaining the collections contemporary feel through fabrication and attention to detail.  Outerwear becomes more structured and the use of warmer winter fabrics such as traditional wool Melton’s and padded internals are key.  Laundered corduroy tailoring is styled with knitted roll necks while chunky fisherman’s style knits can be worn as an outer layer over a classic pique polo.

The third drop, ‘Up Beat’, look back further and draws inspiration from the late 50s, when work wear was commonplace and clothing was designed to last.  Herringbone wool pea coats and the heavy warm knitwear that improves with age sit alongside other pieces such as a laundered padded nylon shirt jacket, reverberating the functional tone of the collection.
