Drapers 30 under 30 2018: Molly Goddard, designer

Age: 28

What she’s learnt: “Stick to the things you do best, rather than trying to please everyone all the time. It is surprisingly hard when you are under pressure.”

Womenswear designer Molly Goddard’s signature tulle party dresses have made her one of London Fashion Week’s most exciting new names. Her career started in 2014, when Goddard held an off-schedule party/presentation during LFW. She dressed 20 friends in her handmade designs, some still wearing their own jeans and T-shirts underneath. The next day London concept store Dover Street Market and multi-brand retailer IT Hong Kong placed orders.

Since then, Goddard has won the British Emerging Talent award at the 2016 Fashion Awards and was named a finalist for the prestigious 2017 LVMH prize for emerging designers. The brand now has 30 stockists around the world, including Browns and Matchesfashion.

“Moving into a good-sized, beautiful studio in late September 2017, where we all have space to work and big windows to look out of feels like a really big achievement,” Goddard tells Drapers. “I’ve shown in amazing spaces, such as Tate Britain, Tate Modern and the Victoria and Albert Museum, which I would never have dreamt of as a teenager growing up in London.”

Goddard urges those looking to follow in her footsteps to gain as much industry experience as possible. As a teenager, she did work experience at Giles Deacon and later interned at John Galliano and Meadham Kirchoff.

“Working in the industry for a while before starting a company is very important. University doesn’t teach you all of the amazing creative roles there are within a company.”
