E-Commerce: Freebies with products - Updated

I have an online store selling bags, luggage and rucksacks by Caribee, Australia’s market leader and just recently arrived in the UK. Online sales are good but could be better. Do you think offering gifts with purchase for virtually all the products will make much difference to sales?

For example, free water bottles with the bags that have water bottle pockets, free bladders with the hydration compatible bags, free pencil cases with the school bags and free caps with the backpacks. The products will cost me about 3.00 each but the value to the customer is more like 10.

Yes it will help your “hunters” (those who’ve completed the research stage and know what they want) but not necessarily your “browsers” (who are still shopping around). My recommendation would be to trial it on a few of your products and see if they shift any better, then roll out if it’s a positive test. Be careful though as your customers will begin to expect such add-ons as default and if you one day decided to stop doing this offer then you may see a decline in sales.

Offering free items with purchases could indeed see your sales increase, however in the mid to long term is this something you are willing to sustain? And would this be an offer to just new or existing customers as well.

If you are new to the UK market we would recommend you look at ways of increasing your reach at no extra cost, for example maybe you should consider affiliate marketing which will give you a broader market to sell your products. Affiliate marketing It is a cost effective way of acquiring new customers by partnering with affiliate sites.

This model allows the affiliate to drive traffic to your site through the promotion of your products on their site, the affiliate will only be rewarded if a sales is made which would be derived from your cost of sale.     I read that you are looking for promotional ideas to bosst your online sales. I have a fantastic idea which I used when I was working in Asia. It was for retail sales though, but could also be used online.
