Gemma Metheringham

Managing director, Karen Millen

Leather jackets have been a signature Karen Millen product for the last 10 years and we’ve seen the range of styles grow , allowing us to experiment with different techniques from casual garment washing to create a distressed antiqued finish to , studding and eyeleting  or adding feminine frills in metallic leathers . From this our leather range has now extended to include dresses , skirts and trousers, and we’re experimenting with stretch suedes for next spring. The body con dress with jersey side panels is amazingly flattering.

Leather jackets have been a big seller for Karen Millen and the sales continue to surprise us . One season we launched a sheepskin collar washed leather jacket in a very hot July and it sold out in the first four weeks. I will cherish a shrunken washed leather biker jacket that fits like I’ve had it forever.

The trend that has surprised me the most in terms of the success it has had has to be this season’s extreme stretch suede thigh high boots. They retailed at £399 and we had a waiting list before they launched and sold out almost immediately, but the product category of the decade is definitely the dress.
