The best selling trend of the last 10 years was the cargo pant by streetwear brand Maharishi, when I worked at Selfridges about eight years ago. Davina McCall wore them on Big Brother while she was pregnant and they became a style uniform.  They ranged from £165 for the plain versions up to £400 for an embellished version.  They were an absolute phenomenon and we sold thousands of them – I have never seen anything like it.  The secret to the success? They were comfortable, hit the grunge trend ala All Saints the band and had a feminine touch which made them accessible to a wide age group. It lasted for about three seasons and then petered off as others started ripping them off and they infiltrated all the levels of the high street.

I will cherish my Antonio Berardi panel grey jacket.  It fits me like a glove and I bought it about 10 years ago in L’Eclaireur in Paris in the Sale.  I remember at the time it was expensive for me as I was at the start of my buying career so funds were limited but it has more than paid for itself as I have worn it so much through the years – it’s timeless.  I have even had it invisibly mended and the lining redone so that it can keep going.
