Technical difficulties hit Harrods website during New Year's Sale

Luxury department store Harrods website has been taking offline today during peak New Year Sales trading because of technical difficulties.

The website has been offline for over eight hours and engineers have been working all day to rectify the situation.

A Harrods spokesman said it was hoped that the site would be up and running “fairly quickly”.

The website failure will come as a blow to the retailer as bargain savvy shoppers flock online to take advantage of the luxury store’s Sale.

The reason for the problem was unclear. One customer told Drapers she was informed by the retailer’s customer services that the site had been attacked by hackers but a Harrods spokesman did not confirm that.
