UK Fashion Hub hunts for sponsors for Olympic site

UK Fashion Hub, the organisation behind plans to redevelop the Olympic media centre into a hub for the UK fashion industry, is seeking a sponsor after getting the green light to submit a formal bid next month.

The 1 million sq ft site, part of the Olympic complex in east London, would house a range of facilities for fashion skills training, manufacturing and trade under four key areas – Learn, Do, Show and Sell. Developers are now looking for either commercial or training partners to sponsor these areas.

UK Fashion Hub can now press ahead with a formal bid, after one to acquire the entire site by health charity Wellcome Trust was rejected by the Olympic Park Legacy Company earlier this month.

If the proposals prove successful it would be a massive boost to Drapers’ Save Our Skills campaign, which aims to preserve fashion craft skills in the UK and was mentioned in the organisation’s original plans.

Gavin Ambrose, UK Fashion Hub spokesman, said: “It is very apt that we are talking about training opportunities for young people given the situation with the recent riots. Training people in the skills to work in the fashion sector presents a raft of different opportunities for young people.”
