What advice would you give experienced buyers wanting to move into the Fashion/Retail industry?

I have over 10 years buying experience in the Marine/Oil & Gas industries and would live a change of direction, in particular into Fashion/Retail. However I’m finding it extremely difficult to make that transition as companies tend to want industry experience.

Thanks for your question. It sounds like you have solid experience in buying within your industry. Unfortunately it is very rare for people to move into the retail / fashion industry at a Buyer level without retail / fashion experience. Most will have to move a couple of rungs down the career ladder (Buying Assistant / Assistant Buyer level) and work their way up from there. However, if you would like to send your CV through to nicolawensley@michaelpage.com we can have a further discussion.

We also have a specialist procurement and oil and gas division that may have more hybrid roles which could utilise your experience and interest in the retail industry. I look forward to hearing from you.
