How to be a Head of marketing at a footwear multiple

Advice from Deepak Saluja, Managing consultant for digital and marketing at Success Appointments

To become a head of marketing for a footwear retailer you need to start by looking for opportunities advertised in industry-related press and websites, and also forums and conferences where you can network.

You should be educated to degree level and I’d suggest studying for a qualification from the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM).

You’ll need a solid marketing background of at least five to seven years in footwear and fashion and experience of retail, brand and direct marketing strategy, writing documents, key stakeholder skills, managing teams and budgets.

Employers look for candidates who have relevant experience with strong brands and can show evidence of campaigns where there is clear return on investment.

You’ll be responsible for creative, customer-focused point-of-sale and marketing communications and will manage the marketing budget.

You’ll be involved in compiling sales forecasts, targets, incentives, in-store marketing, the promotional calendar, managing your team, and external relationships with designers, ad agencies and suppliers.

Salaries range from £50,000 to £80,000.
