How to be an Own-label lingerie buying director at a high street chain

Advice from Donna Jones, Business manager, buying and merchandising at Freedom Recruitment

To become a lingerie buying director you should aim to achieve a high-level grade at university within a product or design-related subject and ideally you will secure internships as part of your course.

Once in the industry you must gain an overall understanding across all business functions including retail operations, merchandising, design and finance. Communication with design and technical teams is essential. You’ll need to demonstrate a good understanding of fabrications and the fit process.

As a successful buying director you will have a natural affinity to product, be commercially minded, possess strong leadership skills and have a proven track record in delivering results across people management, sales, margin and profit. You will develop the supplier base and look at overall strategy and positioning, while having a solid understanding of the customer profile and upcoming trends. The role requires exceptional commitment, passion and ambition.

Prospective employers will look for driven, innovative candidates who are natural leaders and have a record of delivering results.

Salaries range from £100,000 to £150,000, often with other benefits.
