JJB Sports set to sell fitness clubs to Dave Whelan

JJB Sports is understood to be in exclusive talks with Dave Whelan, the group’s founder, about a sale of its fitness club operation, according to reports.

According to the The Times, JJB Sports is in talks with Whelan to take on the 50-gym chain. JJB Sports has to sell its fitness operation to raise cash to pay back debts to its lenders HBOS, Barclays and Kaupthing.

Sports Direct owner Mike Ashley and gym business LA Fitness were among others understood to have previously show interest in the bid.
