Fashion sales at John Lewis rose 5.7% for the week to March 7 despite an overall fall of 2.1% for period, following uncertainty in the financial markets.
John Lewis said that women’s footwear benefited from the cold snap, up 12.6%, and handbags were also selling well, up 17%.
John Lewis head of supply chain and administration Andy Banks said: “All fashion areas were up by between 20% and more than 100%, demonstrating the significant opportunity in this area. Babywear had another good week and the introduction of a basics range for the summer should see this trend continue.”
On Wednesday, John Lewis reported a 26.8% fall in operating profit to £146 million for the year to January 31.
