John Lewis fashion sales rise 6.6%

John Lewis’ fashion sales rose 6.6% on a like-for-like basis for the week to April 11.

The increase was against the overall trend which saw total like-for-like sales at John Lewis drop 1.5% to £48.44 million.

John Lewis’ star performers were kids footwear, up 32%, and men’s footwear which saw a 6% rise.

John Lewis selling operations director Dan Knowles said the week, which included Good Friday and the Saturday of the Easter weekend, was John Lewis’ strongest of the week so far, although the fall of Easter, much later this year, flattered the figures.

Knowles said: “We have had a good Easter trading period, having performed well against the competition and selling Easter stocks well.”

He added that the weather had also impacted on trade. Knowles said: “We started poorly, had a strong middle to the week, and then with many areas of the country enjoying a sunny and warm Saturday, it’s no surprise that this was the least strong day of the week.”

The strongest branch performance came from Knight & Lee where sales rose 16.6%.
