Fashion sales at John Lewis rose 3% for the week to April 25 compared to last year, bucking the overall trend at the department store chain.
John Lewis’ total sales for the week dropped 5.1% to £44.39 million. The retailer said that good weather kept customers away at the beginning of the week.
However, fashion was a strong performer with sales of kidswear up 27% and womenswear brands up 10.5%. John Lewis said that customer reaction to its new ranges had been very positive.
The business’ Peter Jones store in London was a top performer with sales up 5.2% and the Knight & Lee branch up 2.3%.
David Barford, John Lewis director of selling operations Region B, said: “We know we have exciting product and that our customer service is second to none. If we in branches inspire our customers with compelling product displays and deliver great customer service consistently we will make the most of the opportunities that will no doubt come our way.”
